Australian ‘Cli-Fi’ 2067 gets Green Light

May 4, 2018
Local VFX wiz Seth Larney (pictured) to write and direct his first Australian film, after debuting with last year's Malaysian smash hit Tombiruo.
Working behind the scenes on everything from Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith to That Sugar Film, Seth Larney recently turned feature film director with the Malaysian fantasy actioner Tombiruo and is now set to direct a ‘climate fiction’ local flick with 2067. Set in a future where earth is on the verge of collapse, 2067 is described as a ‘dystopian thriller about one man’s journey through time to save his dying world.’
“As a director, my passion is in creating genre stories that are a fun and entertaining ride first and foremost,” said Seth Larney. “If we can then infuse that ride with themes that promote conversation about our relationships to each other and to our planet, then I cannot think of a better reason to make cinema. For me, these two layers are the power of Sci-Fi and I’m excited to have the opportunity to make these kinds of movies on home soil.”
2067 has the support of Screen Australia, Create NSW and the South Australian Film Corporation, and is produced by Lisa Shaunessy through her company Arcadia and Kate Crosser from Kojo Entertainment.
Casting is currently underway, with filming to commence in August in regional NSW and Adelaide Studios. Understandably, Larney will oversee VFX, which will be supervised by Beijing-based John Dietz from Bang Bang (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), with production design by Jacinta Leong (Pacific Rim: Uprising, Mad Max: Fury Road).
